Texas, the Lone Star State

The Big D

Our trip on Wednesday, May 26 from Montréal, Canada to Dallas, Texas (or the Big D) didn't go very smoothly. But I guess if you spend so much time on the road, something is bound to go wrong. We woke up at 5.30 am in Montréal, Canada and drove 6 hours to Buffalo, New York. After two hours at the airport, we found that our layover flight to Detroit was delayed because of a storm. Delta put us on another flight to Dallas through Atlanta. We made it to Dallas by midnight - our bags spent the night in Detroit and only arrived 18 hours later...

So that's why, on Thursday May 27th you could see two Belgians walking all over scorching hot Dallas in long jeans. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the sites. We started by visiting the Dallas Cowboys Stadium... seems weird to visit a stadium but this isn't just any old stadium - this is the most hi-tech stadium in the US, and it is big, very big (hey, in Texas, everything is bigger!)

Next, we went to the Stock Yards in Fort Worth. We just arrived and a procession of Texas longhorns cows passed us by, which totally immersed us in the cowboy experience.

But Fort Worth also has very impressive art museums. The Modern Art Museum and especially the Kimbell Art Museum (which among other great paintings, has the first painting of Michelangelo) ended up in our list of amazing museums (right next to the MoMA of NYC) and not only for their art, the architecture of the buildings was equally beautiful.

Downtown Dallas is nice, modern and clean but rather deserted compared to New York City (I guess in plus 35° C, people try to stay inside the airco as much as possible). We visited the Nasher Sculpture Garden with again an impressive collection of Picasso, Miro, Rodin and the like. We also passed by the place where president Kennedy was shot, very unfortunate that this is one of the bigger attractions which the Big D is known for.
