Los Angeles
Last Friday night, we arrived in Los Angeles ready to explore the West coast. Notwithstanding our jetlag (there is a 3 hour time difference with the South East), we started early Saturday morning on Hollywood Boulevard walking the Walk of Fame, parading up the stairs of the Kodak Gallery where the Oscars are held and comparing our hands and feet with those of the stars set in concrete in front of the Chinese Theather. Next up was Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills (unfortunately, the maximum on our credit card was not high enough to make any purchases) and by 11 am we were already back on Hollywood Blvd to watch the world cup game US - Ghana (guess who insisted on that?).
After the game, we spent one hour stuck in traffic before finally reaching Santa Monica. We were kinda disappointed by Santa Monica, a lot of concrete and commercial shops... but on the other hand, we have never been "beach people".
So, we quickly moved on (well, not exactly quick since we spent more time stuck in traffic) to the Getty Center. The Getty was amazing not so much for its collection but more so for the building. The museum lies on the top of a hill overlooking Los Angeles and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Definitely our most favorite part of LA! In the evening, we met up with friends, Adam, Annie and Nick at the Red Lion Tavern in Silverlake.
The next morning, we were ready for another big day... We started at the La Brea Tar Pits, one of the strangest things we've seen so far. Right in the middle of the city, there is a big natural 42,000 year old asphalt pit. Over the years, a lot of animals got stuck in the pit so today, it is one of the richest fossil resources in the world. Of course, we also drove down Mulholland Drive giving excellent views over Los Angeles. Next up was lunch at TK Burger in Huntington Beach, surf city and from there we made our way up North on the Pacific Coast Highway.
