Cheyenne Frontier Days

The Daddy Of 'Em All!

On July 26th, we had to drive all the way to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Since Cheyenne was so honored that I was spending my birthday at their city, they organized a nice rodeo party that evening. Well, maybe not entirely in my honor...

Every July, Cheyenne hosts the Cheyenne Frontier Days, a big festival celebrating all things Western, and has been doing this since 1897. The festival has grown into one of the biggest rodeo shows in the world, with more than 12,000 participants and about 300,000 visitors each year. It is referred to as "The Daddy of 'Em All".

We figured that if we wanted to go to a rodeo, we might as well do it right and have the "real" experience. So, we went to see PBR, Professional Bull Riding (the best cowboys can earn a million dollars!). I never knew that you could earn a living with bull riding although it wouldn't have changed my career path if I had known. I think one of the requirements for PBR is that you're a little nuts... Climbing on a bull that's not particularly happy about having a human on its back and a strap wrapped around the groin area for at least 8 seconds to be then thrown of, isn't exactly a 9 to 5 job... The first guy we saw riding the bull got hit very badly in his back, being carried out of the arena on a stretcher.

We had fun though! There's something bizarrely exciting about seeing men thrown of a raging bull.
